Hmmm...<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />
<br />
I thought I'd post some pics of what my costuming guild has been up to in the past several months. This spring we decided to have an April Promenade at a local arboretum. The weather was fabulous!<br />
I wore my Titanic-era evening gown.<br />
<br />
I know. An evening gown for a daytime promenade. How gauche!<br />
But it was comfortable and I didn't have any pictures of it yet, so on it went. <br />
<br />
This is the group we started out with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVfNlpAQO0BoGBGbVU2yP1bMueifVRkj3zSvWLLgKVl3gO5iwCKxw_WeNcNDe47c3vkZJFk_wgKqrGBBhyphenhyphenpidzYrj-Zltrr8OAlk7bkfGvT0y8wDihpMWOSwWt3YJ7kh3Dgb_7EPHH6Dc/s1600/group+1+pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVfNlpAQO0BoGBGbVU2yP1bMueifVRkj3zSvWLLgKVl3gO5iwCKxw_WeNcNDe47c3vkZJFk_wgKqrGBBhyphenhyphenpidzYrj-Zltrr8OAlk7bkfGvT0y8wDihpMWOSwWt3YJ7kh3Dgb_7EPHH6Dc/s320/group+1+pic.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then more people joined us later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8y_SHUYiC8BMylUIdPp80-HCsvNLjy_nsRswDaUiHUVAAJrKGWf_QXMz4Sc8AhkdAnr-JwODFKh12P8p1VtECIzsw2s3lz59g7Di4iyGAll6CPixe9JM3eEYGb9F6aBcirEzEH-CVmvI/s1600/group+2+pic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8y_SHUYiC8BMylUIdPp80-HCsvNLjy_nsRswDaUiHUVAAJrKGWf_QXMz4Sc8AhkdAnr-JwODFKh12P8p1VtECIzsw2s3lz59g7Di4iyGAll6CPixe9JM3eEYGb9F6aBcirEzEH-CVmvI/s320/group+2+pic.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A picture of me hamming it up theatrically and a photo-shopped version one of the guild members made.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Later in the summer, the guild had a booth at our local Maker Faire. We have had a booth there for as long as it has existed in Kansas City. In fact, that's how I found out about the guild in the first place.<br />
<br />
We like to offer some interesting hands-on things for the kids, so we had coloring sheets to design your own superhero costume and a mask-decorating station to make superhero masks. We were totally wiped out of everything by the end of the second day!<br />
<br />
For the adults, I bring in my dress form and 3 costumes. This year it was an 1885 bustle gown, a 1775 robe a la francaise and a kimono. I have a poster that says "What Underwear is Under There?" and I periodically undress and re-dress the dress form whenever anyone asks. Fun for me & educational for them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN70WpyDX2i0ATG4C34jfEeT6CskBMvZnbaSVxx7Lf282UI2zxrWi_4hlOOqhweq0jLxd2f6HddRxWFP_Jv50yYthpG59i7Mk2EsLD-PnCPXyYrpTuk3qGIes8EqfNN-wvLLvJdGMkOao/s1600/Guild+booth+at+Maker+Faire+2018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1138" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN70WpyDX2i0ATG4C34jfEeT6CskBMvZnbaSVxx7Lf282UI2zxrWi_4hlOOqhweq0jLxd2f6HddRxWFP_Jv50yYthpG59i7Mk2EsLD-PnCPXyYrpTuk3qGIes8EqfNN-wvLLvJdGMkOao/s320/Guild+booth+at+Maker+Faire+2018.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then in July, we had a workshop to create steampunk accessories. This was in preparation for an August outing to our local <a href="http://1856.com/" target="_blank">Steamboat Arabia museum</a>. We're doing a Steampunk Steamboat tour!<br />
<br />
Things we made at the workshop:<br />

So I'll be doing a couple of posts to catch my subscribers (all 3 of you) up with what I've been doing lately costume-wise.<br />
<br />
First, my last Costume-Con historical entry (talked about <a href="http://craftyladydressdiaries.blogspot.com/2016/08/costume-con-recap-or-holy-crap-how-late.html" target="_blank">here</a>) was the subject of an article in Virtual Costumer. Virtual Costumer is the newsletter put out by the Silicon Web Chapter of the International Costumers' Guild. They took my long-winded and rambling documentation that I submitted and edited it into something resembling an actual article! Kudos to the editor!<br />
<br />
Here are the pics of the costume: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A group of us from my city are driving to St Louis to join the St. Louis Georgian Sewing Society for a francaise tea. That's a fancy tea party at the Ritz Carleton where we all wear our 18th century finery.<br />
<br />
If you remember me posting pics of my 18th century "Marie Antoinette-style" dress, you'll remember that I had GIGANTIC hair. (No, really! It was freakin' huge!) When I cut my hair short, I used the inner wire support form to make a similar style wig. Well, that was very good for a stage presentations but very unwieldy for regular wear. So I decided to re-style the wig. I've spent the last week undoing, de-tangling and restyling it.<br />
<br />
BTW - I used the book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/18th-Century-Styling-Step-Step/dp/0692220437/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1533584694&sr=1-1&keywords=18th+century+wig+styling" target="_blank">18th Century Hair & Wig Styling</a> by Kendra Van Cleave. I can't recommend it highly enough! I chose one of the designs from the late 1760s-early 1770s that was a medium height.<br />
<br />
Here are the results -<br />

<br />crafty ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12628622926169034622noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4755577195854664790.post-57518037226717301212017-07-11T13:26:00.001-07:002017-09-22T13:20:48.629-07:00In a Japanese state of mindMy next really big costume is going to be a geisha hikizuri kimono for the 2019 Costume Con in Boston. I don't normally go to conventions outside of the midwest, but I won a free membership to it with my Cinderella costume at WorldCon. (Yay!)<br />
<br />
I normally win workmanship awards but not performance awards, so the last time that I competed at Costume Con I focused on my performance and didn't worry about workmanship. (My Edwardian quick-change) This time, I am determined to win awards for both!!!<br />
<br />
So I'll be (hopefully) blowing the workmanship judges away by teaching myself the traditional technique of hand-dyeing and painting kimono called yuzen-zome. And I'll be recreating a real geisha performance from a YouTube video.<br />
<br />
There's just one problem.<br />
<br />
I've never actually <u>made</u> a kimono before.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFZzZGXsn3dRVe2hlz_vI-kZ2G3lcNPAdAjBaMW9loE0oNLxU_X0dpXezDHSmvBrD-_24O4JNJvza019Lwn-gW0tOfK_I1NkBZGVijiFIj55VCGzDNM5isDwMvrBtwN98PRkZs-DPJt8/s1600/yukata_fabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgFZzZGXsn3dRVe2hlz_vI-kZ2G3lcNPAdAjBaMW9loE0oNLxU_X0dpXezDHSmvBrD-_24O4JNJvza019Lwn-gW0tOfK_I1NkBZGVijiFIj55VCGzDNM5isDwMvrBtwN98PRkZs-DPJt8/s200/yukata_fabric.jpg" width="112" /></a>So I've been immersing myself in research on kimono making and traditions. My first attempt is a summer cotton kimono called a yukata. It's super casual and worn to summer festivals the same way that we would wear shorts, a tank top and flip-flops. It's also a little easier to sew than a regular kimono because it's cotton, not lined, doesn't have as much structure and is frequently machine sewn. (High end silk kimono like those worn by geisha are always hand sewn.)<br />
<br />
Traditionally, yukata are white and blue/indigo. Modern yukata are all sorts of colors and patterns. So here is a cotton fabric that I picked out for mine. It's colorful, but the colors are softer. I don't think you can tell from the pics, but there are subtle gold outlines around the shapes. To help you visualize it, each motif is about 1.5" (about 4cm) tall.<br />
<br />

Update: Here's a pic taken of me wearing the final yukata at my costume guild's MakerFaire booth. Please forgive my lousy kitsuke!<br />

<br />
No. Really?!?<br />
<br />
Shut up.<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6B5CwG2zNfw50efZyqwNQeTUtH0HOush-PEZ7IfVn9dTEkVKhlbP6BGYitYG9vqzeOZAODw3qr4adcUhzecoVS5Uf3TeI3kRCYmvgKfo46_8KaEj0pgborJP7Wb9EfiwgvaY0FkhX6l8/s1600/Good+Housekeeping+1915+April+p460.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1071" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6B5CwG2zNfw50efZyqwNQeTUtH0HOush-PEZ7IfVn9dTEkVKhlbP6BGYitYG9vqzeOZAODw3qr4adcUhzecoVS5Uf3TeI3kRCYmvgKfo46_8KaEj0pgborJP7Wb9EfiwgvaY0FkhX6l8/s320/Good+Housekeeping+1915+April+p460.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<br />
When my library decided to save space by getting rid of some of the very old back issues of magazines, I jumped at the chance to get some.<br />
<br />
That's how I ended up with bound copies of Good Housekeeping from 1911 to 1920.<br />
<br />
And since that time period puts them firmly in the public domain here in the US, I decided to scan them! (Well, the fashion pages, anyway.)<br />
<br />
I then decided to share the fruits of my labors with my fellow costumers, since I have gotten so much from others over the years.<br />
It will be a long process, but here are the first results -<br />
<br />
Good Housekeeping fashion pages from 1915 in PDF format.<br />

<br />
And now, the big reveal!!<br />
<br />
The original illustration: <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLBMSSs5vbtttcyj2UEaUv0NHL9j0uppNEZVgoF4TnXIoVb9f-_RcTzDyo4zlcPIuL3xViUstEqHbPLz7sh19ZH-Oprwmo6lWo-kKgNLqkVjmzhW-qicZUHhbUl-StAr0m53r6o4By0c0/s1600/28cd95330337b9dcbbb671cd25f5b641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="698" data-original-width="530" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLBMSSs5vbtttcyj2UEaUv0NHL9j0uppNEZVgoF4TnXIoVb9f-_RcTzDyo4zlcPIuL3xViUstEqHbPLz7sh19ZH-Oprwmo6lWo-kKgNLqkVjmzhW-qicZUHhbUl-StAr0m53r6o4By0c0/s200/28cd95330337b9dcbbb671cd25f5b641.jpg" width="151" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIR5RVrDVUwHZG0wuBP0bKMUe8Js79FfbEiST1AnbNXIOEP5ybiAVrDWYJA0O2LtRTElBo6acWAy8L2AZv2eChFFCM9WNeXB4PZqw1B234G234v5Njo_jnZjyEjJXGSWdxGHMUPaGwmrA/s1600/My+cinderella+cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1218" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIR5RVrDVUwHZG0wuBP0bKMUe8Js79FfbEiST1AnbNXIOEP5ybiAVrDWYJA0O2LtRTElBo6acWAy8L2AZv2eChFFCM9WNeXB4PZqw1B234G234v5Njo_jnZjyEjJXGSWdxGHMUPaGwmrA/s320/My+cinderella+cropped.jpg" width="243" /></a><br />
And my dress:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
41 yards of fabric<br />
3000 glass pearls<br />
180" hoop skirt<br />
50 yards of ribbon and lace trim<br />
dozens of hand-sewn ribbon roses <br />
13 pounds<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm tired.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
But it was all completely worth it when Kinuko Craft came backstage and saw me!<br />
Look how she reacted! I even managed to keep my dignity and not to act like a fangirl!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwclA5Lzgoi_09alEBHS1lfQemE-hxIi6hkw1gpgmkzuCZwHb6svasm66zZLuUKodosAV5c7IvPKAazDNQSShJtwKmz9rXohkxIQ50vHHo4GW_ggeSOX8dR2Kg4Ru5ckvntLEuSSg3XiI/s1600/kinuko+craft+and+my+cinderella+cosplay+cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="997" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwclA5Lzgoi_09alEBHS1lfQemE-hxIi6hkw1gpgmkzuCZwHb6svasm66zZLuUKodosAV5c7IvPKAazDNQSShJtwKmz9rXohkxIQ50vHHo4GW_ggeSOX8dR2Kg4Ru5ckvntLEuSSg3XiI/s320/kinuko+craft+and+my+cinderella+cosplay+cropped.jpg" width="199" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
(Oh...and I also leveled up from Journeyman to Master with this dress and won a free entry to Costume Con 2019.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Success.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm knee-deep in costume sewing for <a href="https://midamericon2.org/" target="_blank">WorldCon / Mid-America Con II</a>. Now, I've never been to a Worldcon before. and given the steep price, I hadn't planned on going to this one even though it is in my home town of Kansas City for the first time since the 1970s. But......<br />
Then I saw who the artist guest of honor was.<br />
<br />
Kinuko Craft!! My favorite children's book illustrator!<br />
<br />
Okay, I guess that means I'll go if I can get one of my books autographed. So I signed up for the installment plan and had a year to look forward to it.<br />
<br />
Of course I started thinking about costumes.<br />
<br />
Of course I should do a costume from one of her books. Hmmmm... which one?<br />
<br />
I know! Cinderella! The most outrageous, over-the-top dress of all time!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXgYsgq12TFUO_DkCN2yHMrJex09Sxrz-9-aGA59xMrgM0hH4rMOyyqi_jbihsZR5ad9VbbwqxxcpBudnzsxZw_UIzVcVKiDv7P-KQutGLCOsK0m1WJiYp7VcAB-2HWde5M__QuL7y1O0/s1600/28cd95330337b9dcbbb671cd25f5b641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="698" data-original-width="530" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXgYsgq12TFUO_DkCN2yHMrJex09Sxrz-9-aGA59xMrgM0hH4rMOyyqi_jbihsZR5ad9VbbwqxxcpBudnzsxZw_UIzVcVKiDv7P-KQutGLCOsK0m1WJiYp7VcAB-2HWde5M__QuL7y1O0/s320/28cd95330337b9dcbbb671cd25f5b641.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
But I have a year to do it in, right? (rolls eyes)<br />
So I started collecting fabric, since I knew this was going to be an expensive project.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And some lace from <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0342395/raschelle-lace-gold" target="_blank">fabric.com</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Add some gold satin, light gold glitter tulle and a boat-load of lace trim and I was in business!<br />
<br />
<br />
More in the next post... crafty ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12628622926169034622noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4755577195854664790.post-74898191868897963282016-08-12T07:57:00.000-07:002016-08-12T07:57:38.580-07:00Costume-Con recap (or Holy Crap! How late is this post?!)So I actually competed in the historical competition at Costume Con. No workmanship awards, because I am fully aware that my workmanship on this one was crap. Seriously. Major crap.<br />
<br />
I was more interested in getting it working than how it looked inside.<br />
<br />
First of all, I have to say that I am bad at thinking up clever presentations. Very, very bad. So I was determined to win a performance award this time. I tried to think of something that I have never seen done at a costume convention. Aha! A quick-change!<br />
<br />
Not the kind where you flip your cloak inside out or something. Those have been done. I mean the kind that magicians do where you can't figure out how they changed outfits completely in 2 seconds.<br />
<br />
I wasn't sure if I could do it, but I started researching. I decided on the Edwardian era, because I figured that I could stuff a lot of fabric inside one of those pigeon-front dresses. ;-)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHBaULTSY-hmdYqqiQFgcR7vnThfAL44dloKf-_brjt05yDMpcQrLZIWYdP_Wi_p6ZHQnk1BTJ9TwcpRWf9XuwLQ5Ha9aJfPZivUUajVR-AAq5XcinnqlvSNYPdcV0yDx3aov6fm84hzs/s1600/edwardian+1+front.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHBaULTSY-hmdYqqiQFgcR7vnThfAL44dloKf-_brjt05yDMpcQrLZIWYdP_Wi_p6ZHQnk1BTJ9TwcpRWf9XuwLQ5Ha9aJfPZivUUajVR-AAq5XcinnqlvSNYPdcV0yDx3aov6fm84hzs/s320/edwardian+1+front.JPG" width="168" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiihmxFw4cvwGOTa0vjsFCA65X6YoYKxz-r5SeEOzpQR8HIv8QIHEHxbIzkul4IC2OEcpctBDtTKKYM6pHl8tgsClVxlxO1PtVoBdXb_-ZkzsTZ6Gk9y0zS1V4a1ZvcvfwTfX34by_AME0/s1600/edwardian+2+back.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiihmxFw4cvwGOTa0vjsFCA65X6YoYKxz-r5SeEOzpQR8HIv8QIHEHxbIzkul4IC2OEcpctBDtTKKYM6pHl8tgsClVxlxO1PtVoBdXb_-ZkzsTZ6Gk9y0zS1V4a1ZvcvfwTfX34by_AME0/s320/edwardian+2+back.JPG" width="177" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then I stepped behind a screen for 5 seconds and emerged wearing this:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I got so many gasps!!!<br />
Later, when the judges were deliberating, the contestants went back out on stage two by two for the audience to take photos. This time I changed right in front of them instead of behind the screen and I still got gasps!<br />
<br />
Then I spent the next hour switching back and forth so that people could see how it was done because it was apparently too fast for people to figure it out even when I did it in front of them.<br />
And I won best presentation for a journeyman! Yay!<br />
<br />
(All photos are by <a href="http://www.realtimeportraitstudio.com/" target="_blank">Real Time Portrait Studio</a>. Thanks Scott!)crafty ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12628622926169034622noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4755577195854664790.post-22597440791161754152016-07-06T12:59:00.001-07:002016-07-06T13:01:33.626-07:00Am I blue...take twoIt seems I'm on a blue streak.<br />
(Hmmm...is that what happens when you streak in winter...)<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />
<br />
On the last episode of "As the Worlds Costumes" our heroine (Crafty Lady) was rushing frantically to make her first Regency. Did she finish on time? Did it fit? Was she eaten by zombies at the premier of the movie?<br />
<br />
Tune in today for the answers to all these questions and more!<br />
<br />
(Yes. Yes. and Don't be silly.)<br />
<br />
In the end, I didn't have time time to make the gauze overdress, but that can wait. The dress turned out rather nicely for a first time I thought.<br />
Here is the group photo at the movie:<br />

I got the professional shot at Cotume Con in Madison, WI. Scott from <a href="http://www.realtimeportraitstudio.com/" target="_blank">Realtime Portrait Studios</a> was there. He always does such a great job of taking our photo at Teslacon that I had shots of all my costumes done.<br />
<br />
Funny...all of my costumes that I took were either blue or green. I didn't plan it that way, though.<br />
<br />
On the next episode of "As the Worlds Costumes"...<br />
How was Costume Con? Did our heroine compete? And how were all of her crazy costuming friends?<br />
Tune in next week to find out!<br />

Well, I had planned on starting my competition outfit for Costume-Con this weekend.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
But...</div>
<div dir="ltr">

<div dir="ltr">
A group from my local costume guild agreed to go with me to Pride & Prejudice & Zombies when it opens in a few weeks. Jane Austin and zombies! How can you beat that?</div>

<br />
So now I'm making my first Regency costume!</div>

Which means that I finally got to dig out the La Mode Bagatelle pattern for a lady's Regency wardrobe that I bought a decade ago and never used.</div>

It's the biggest steampunk convention in the Midwest. Lots of fun times to be had! The theme was the wild west, so there were many western-themed classes and events. The hubby learned how to crack a whip, which pleased him to no end.<br />
<br />
Of course, I had to make a couple of new costumes. Duh.<br />
I decided to do fairy costumes this year, so a steampunk fairy was the obvious choice. But I also decided to make a green absinthe fairy since that fits with the general Victorian vibe of steampunk.<br />
<br />
The absinthe fairy was a fairly typical construction - new corset top, new green skirt, new green fascinator and new wings. The only thing really interesting is that there are fiber optic cables in the wings that light up. It only shows in dim lighting, though.<br />
The fascinator looks a little weird in this pic. The feathers on the side are blending in a little with part of the wing in the back, making it look like I have something sticking out the side of my head. But I do look suitably drunk! <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirbwS_S8LaFJrVv-tNX6lNQvX6x5M0XWM3QLidtMBJz-TS6X88Y0nvr1lw90Du95OdaTl9eULwfhxEpRBi222jcxAIZ-JBprOE0c6RipFUVC9X7k-q2TKAMetjoorET4YmCWWygpzjgqQ/s1600/absinthe+fairy.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirbwS_S8LaFJrVv-tNX6lNQvX6x5M0XWM3QLidtMBJz-TS6X88Y0nvr1lw90Du95OdaTl9eULwfhxEpRBi222jcxAIZ-JBprOE0c6RipFUVC9X7k-q2TKAMetjoorET4YmCWWygpzjgqQ/s320/absinthe+fairy.jpg" width="175" /></a><br />
<br />
The steampunk fairy wings were a little more intricate! They are made of cellophane sandwiched between 2 layers of craft foam. Boy, did it take a long time to cut out all of those openings with an x-acto knife!<br />

Yay!<br />
<br />
I was making it for the costume convention Figments and Filaments. It got a very good reception. And someone recognized it! After I paraded in the fashion show, a woman approached me to get a closer look. She was talking about the cutwork sleeves and suddenly stopped to exclaim "You're the painting! The blonde one!"<br />
<br />I was so stoked!<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />
Here it is in all it's wonderful glory....<br />

<br />
<br />
At a meeting of my local Costumer's Guild chapter, one of the members brought in a book that had some beautiful photos of Italian Renaissance portraits. So the two of us decided to make some Italian Ren costumes for the upcoming Figments & Filaments costume convention.<br />
Looking around the net, I fell in love with <a href="http://my.firedoglake.com/masaccio/2010/05/29/saturday-art-la-bella-nani-by-veronese/" target="_blank">La Bella Nani</a> by Paolo Veronese. That gorgeous blue! Those cutwork sleeves! I had to make it.<br />
<br />
And it fit right into the schedule for the <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/the-historical-sew-monthly-2015/" target="_blank">Historical Sew Monthly</a> group. January's theme was foundations - perfect time to make the camicia (chemise). February's theme was blue - perfect for the dress!<br />
<br />
I used Margo Anderson's Elizabethan Lady's Wardrobe pattern as my base. I adapted it to fit a more Venetian look. But the most elaborate change was the sleeves. I combined the "paned" version of the sleeve into one solid pattern. Then came the hard part!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQS0SxTD4FRAAt5H01FrVEmCVsmDjAUiHWkOfWyIv5KN7MLF0stXP2DfLoi-xpFFkrdirE7axIsObOHHKEP2zwsIOwaALUJOLRmAVUysRQweIY6yJd4o2tn6_7dcieLjKWy6eemN3LSz0/s1600/sleeve+painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQS0SxTD4FRAAt5H01FrVEmCVsmDjAUiHWkOfWyIv5KN7MLF0stXP2DfLoi-xpFFkrdirE7axIsObOHHKEP2zwsIOwaALUJOLRmAVUysRQweIY6yJd4o2tn6_7dcieLjKWy6eemN3LSz0/s1600/sleeve+painting.jpg" height="320" width="155" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbMq9bVG5bTt-0orXtN9aAJ00XjIYxYOtm4E0O2bgKc_SBMjFE0wrQbXxRqJacbZ9toP5rC7-N_ZEPQg4n1g3ftTqrp1tUJ6RsfHqx6mede5mR-SIIFwMyglUmohPq8A-KyJAhHCKEVx4/s1600/20150228_141012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbMq9bVG5bTt-0orXtN9aAJ00XjIYxYOtm4E0O2bgKc_SBMjFE0wrQbXxRqJacbZ9toP5rC7-N_ZEPQg4n1g3ftTqrp1tUJ6RsfHqx6mede5mR-SIIFwMyglUmohPq8A-KyJAhHCKEVx4/s1600/20150228_141012.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
First I had to measure the image and figure out the conversion to make it full sized. (Who says that I never use my math degree in real life?)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I drew a grid on paper and started sketching out the major sections in full size. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1cKS-gmd6oHijkYsiocr_VINV9pY3orGJi5IEj00Lau_MMEOnSb-Fzd5JFaPZ6NGOK4LqZ_9cn-jf8_-GCX0ziaeMIEHMHtCqCDkNFDUBUuqP2k4gWfoagtD7e_md1hLXfJx78YmBU0M/s1600/20150228_141029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1cKS-gmd6oHijkYsiocr_VINV9pY3orGJi5IEj00Lau_MMEOnSb-Fzd5JFaPZ6NGOK4LqZ_9cn-jf8_-GCX0ziaeMIEHMHtCqCDkNFDUBUuqP2k4gWfoagtD7e_md1hLXfJx78YmBU0M/s1600/20150228_141029.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then I traced them onto the pattern piece in the right layout.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwN1UCtHpPWk07rIMmg8_XevtpR1CTQ3PYI4ya-ZvL0monf17qzYYDePTAR53IrpwJiIuer0a6Zx1dAWxe0EE3k18LtVqTOLB_yxUbGTLlktFOSqOL8ydXer-de08X6dAdUGAmiVyugX8/s1600/20150228_141009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a>Using an X-acto knife, I cut out the openings on 1/2 of the pattern.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwN1UCtHpPWk07rIMmg8_XevtpR1CTQ3PYI4ya-ZvL0monf17qzYYDePTAR53IrpwJiIuer0a6Zx1dAWxe0EE3k18LtVqTOLB_yxUbGTLlktFOSqOL8ydXer-de08X6dAdUGAmiVyugX8/s1600/20150228_141009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwN1UCtHpPWk07rIMmg8_XevtpR1CTQ3PYI4ya-ZvL0monf17qzYYDePTAR53IrpwJiIuer0a6Zx1dAWxe0EE3k18LtVqTOLB_yxUbGTLlktFOSqOL8ydXer-de08X6dAdUGAmiVyugX8/s1600/20150228_141009.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFirNihtTxx6PUOgRWAaYasXKfGrBPQ1OoLKaRdMqZOSHQuaV9N3sIVijoFA04Itc7eLXw23Km-Dh0GvvAIixYGlOvNo5kqx5MYkpbS8CrgCvB-72rLBIOahLPLKorENAiMHwCvV2jMK8/s1600/20150228_143231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFirNihtTxx6PUOgRWAaYasXKfGrBPQ1OoLKaRdMqZOSHQuaV9N3sIVijoFA04Itc7eLXw23Km-Dh0GvvAIixYGlOvNo5kqx5MYkpbS8CrgCvB-72rLBIOahLPLKorENAiMHwCvV2jMK8/s1600/20150228_143231.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a><br />
This is how the pattern "stencil" ended up.<br />
<br />
I cut the sleeves out of the velvet material and fused interfacing on to the back of each one. The interfacing had 2 purposes - to give the sleeve a little more body and to keep the cutwork edges from raveling.<br />
<br />
Using my "stencil", I traced the design onto the interfacing, flipping it over to do each side.<br />
<br />
Then came HOURS of cutting the holes with applique scissors! <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's what I ended up with: <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

It's the biggest steampunk convention in the Midwest. And this year we <strike>kidnapped</strike> convinced one of Tom's friends to come along. Mwah ha ha! Another person brainwashed into the steampunk aesthetic! <br />
<br />
Hubby wore the same costumes as last year, but I had to create new ones of course.<br />

This is my stab at ethnic steampunk. The funny thing
is that I had everything already except for the brown corset and that
was pretty easy to throw together.<br />

This
is my pseudo-Japanese demon. I also had everything for this already. I
made the horns several years ago out of upholstery foam. The top and
obi/sash were from my wa-lolita outfit. Pants are from my Bedouin
costume. Why is this steampunk? Beats me. Maybe some Victorian/steampunk
travelers encountered the demon in their travels through Asia. But it
was fun!<br />
(Those of you who know Japanese costume may notice that
the top is folded the wrong direction as if I were dead. I thought that
this would be appropriately sinister for a demon.)<br />

This
one was the best in my opinion - a broken clockwork doll. The brown
corset is the same one from the first pic above. You can't see it, but
the fabric pattern of the skirt and the shoulder decoration is little
steampunk octopi with gears and top hats! Here's a link to the <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/748830" target="_blank">fabric pattern on Spoonflower</a>. Isn't that adorable? <br />

The necklace and earrings are cute little pink octopi. They basically inspired the whole outfit.crafty ladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12628622926169034622noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4755577195854664790.post-12489657071560522202015-03-09T14:04:00.000-07:002015-03-09T14:04:08.891-07:00Le Jazz HotSome people from our local chapter of the <a href="http://www.costume.org/" target="_blank">International Costumers Guild</a> decided to go to a jazz club a few months back. So we got all fancied up in our best flapper dresses! I'd been holding on to a gorgeous chiffon sari that I bought on ebay several years back. I initially bought it thinking about a regency dress, but the opportunity hasn't come up for that. So a 1920s beaded flapper dress it became. :-)<br />

<br />
I used the 1924 2-hour dress pattern layout that's floating all over the internet. I made the under-dress in plain beige satin that I had in my stash. Then I put it on my dress form and draped the outer dress right on top of it in order to take advantage of the beadwork patterns on the sari. The only change I made was to make the rectangles for the skirt wider for the outer dress.
This made the chiffon drape a little at the sides to give it a nice fluttery
effect. I then cut out some beadwork sections from the remaining part of the sari and used them to trim the back neckline of the dress. I also used some of the remaining sari to make the matching head band.<br />
<br />
It's too bad the photos don't show the full, glittery effect of the silver bullion embroidery! <br />

Mea culpa.<br />
Since my sister asked where my pics were, I decided to catch up a little.<br />
So here are pics from a brand new costume convention that started up in the Midwest - <a href="http://figmentsandfilaments.com/" target="_blank">Figments and Filaments</a>. 2014 was the premiere year. I went because I absolutely adored some of the guests of honor. (Especially the lady who does the <a href="http://www.gothic-charm-school.com/" target="_blank">Gothic Charm School</a> website!)<br />
<br />
Anyway, on to the costumes...<br />
<br />
I didn't make anything new for this one, but I got to wear a good variety. <br />

I had a little extra notice for it this year, so I think my costumes were a little better. I was one of the workmanship judges for the big cosplay contest, so I got to see all the best costumes up-close and personal. But that was only on Saturday, so I had Friday night and all day Sunday to play around. :)<br />
<br />
Friday night costume:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7OB3Bno81OO7bM462W2_85O_WKpztoaG-QMq6KuYh0s6PUoOK5JSEXgpnB6MGTuZoTln-HOpkUGHK3W5s-eUUuf9S4QCPrAhbJqr9uKOZlcy_2uyZmP9JcY1l_G44I_Y_zlXA9stYSZM/s1600/black+and+white+lolita+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7OB3Bno81OO7bM462W2_85O_WKpztoaG-QMq6KuYh0s6PUoOK5JSEXgpnB6MGTuZoTln-HOpkUGHK3W5s-eUUuf9S4QCPrAhbJqr9uKOZlcy_2uyZmP9JcY1l_G44I_Y_zlXA9stYSZM/s1600/black+and+white+lolita+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" height="320" width="148" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Friday's costume had to be something quick to change into because I planned on going straight from work. So I threw together this black & white lolita outfit. I already had the all the pieces. The only thing I did was to use some of my left-over white ribbon roses from the skirt to swag the bottom of the dress. I also used them around the top of the dress, but it's hard to see in this photo. You can also see my cute little dog purse peeking out around my right side!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Saturday's costume: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAsHu8MXGrW31x_ZBwschIEXlmRK8z0XrUJ1Jta-jjMY-RGYGwI5xdV0VjGGrkaZuH0Ht2jqUj8KyeKL9bFWEoixdaweEcZQ5_qaD1eI6DV_47DNs4XfTwkkqhm4XN4PkmRTGtXrJzspI/s1600/blue+lolita+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAsHu8MXGrW31x_ZBwschIEXlmRK8z0XrUJ1Jta-jjMY-RGYGwI5xdV0VjGGrkaZuH0Ht2jqUj8KyeKL9bFWEoixdaweEcZQ5_qaD1eI6DV_47DNs4XfTwkkqhm4XN4PkmRTGtXrJzspI/s1600/blue+lolita+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
I went a little more elaborate with this one because I was judging costume workmanship that day. I wanted to put a little more effort into it to show that I knew what I was talking about. <br />
<br />
The entire outfit was based on the shoes. They're from American Duchess and they're called the "<a href="http://www.american-duchess.com/shoes-18th-century/antoinette-18th-century-mules-blue" target="_blank">Antoinette</a>". Lovely little repros of 18th century mules. They come in pink, too. My costume ended up so froofy! (Yes, I know that's not a real word.) Every time I looked in the mirror, I couldn't help thinking that it looked like a wedding cake exploded all over me. ;)<br />
<br />
And the one that took the longest to make....<br />
<br />
Sunday's costume:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtTp6hgOsO9MyyWSAMRu18t370cJeyJQQw9MzfeHxDaC6-Y22MZ61TN9QLH1rSmnL-SBFNC4awqwX1b-gBPqbXORFAoF4VM5qKEbYq6D0_X-iSB7IZM-pW5ti2cq5BlT9FTXUYD9q1HvY/s1600/panibana+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtTp6hgOsO9MyyWSAMRu18t370cJeyJQQw9MzfeHxDaC6-Y22MZ61TN9QLH1rSmnL-SBFNC4awqwX1b-gBPqbXORFAoF4VM5qKEbYq6D0_X-iSB7IZM-pW5ti2cq5BlT9FTXUYD9q1HvY/s1600/panibana+naka-kon+2014+small.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
It's a reproduction of a character from a Japanese video game. It's not one that I've ever played. (WAY too racy!!) But I looked through the website <a href="http://www.animecharactersdatabase.com/" target="_blank">Anime Characters Database</a> for costume ideas and I loved this one. Here's the original pic:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I think it turned out pretty well!<br />
<br />
My sister gave me the hoop petticoat from her wedding dress over a decade ago & I finally used it. Thanks Jo! And the brown ultra-suede fabric has been in my stash almost 15 years. I only had 2 yards of it, and it ended up being just barely enough. <br />
<br />
On Sunday, the photographer brought her little girl to the convention and she wanted a picture with me. (She was quite taken with my dress!) I crouched down to be at her height, but then she crouched down, too. She was SOOOO adorable!<br />

My article goes public!The reason I started this blog was to document the creation of my competition costume for Costume-Con 2013.<br />
Then I decided to wait until after the competition for my tell all story.<br />
Then I was asked to write an article on its creation for Virtual Costumer e-zine, so I put it on hold here once again.<br />
<br />
Now you can read the whole thing!<br />
The older versions of Virtual Costumer are available to the public when a new version comes out for the guild members. So my article is now available for your viewing pleasure.<br />

I got some new costume books in the mail!<br />
<br />
I'm a librarian by trade, so pretty, new books make me happy.<br />
<br />
Anyway...on one of my historical costuming lists someone asked if the Martha Pullen favorite places series of books were any good. They are at <a href="http://www.hamiltonbooks.com/products/search?q=martha+pullen&cat_id=&find=Find+%C2%BB" target="_blank">Hamilton Book</a>s for $7.95 each so I decided to take a chance on them.<br />
<br />
Bottom line...I would have paid much more for them. They are a steal at that price!<br />
The ones I got were these:<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't get the DAR quilt collection book or the V&A children's collection books because those areas don't really interest me. Oh...and the Martha Pullen's vintage collection book is volume 1. Hamilton Books didn't have volume 2 available.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For those of you who don't know who Martha Pullen is, she is the founder and editor of "Sew Beautiful" magazine. She also has a big business in heirloom sewing and quilting supplies, sewing books, and TV sewing shows </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For historical costumers, here's the run down on the books to give you an idea of whether or not you'll like them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First of all, they are much heavier on children's clothing than most costuming books. There are between 50 and 60 items featured in each book and they are split about evenly between adult and children's/babies' clothing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Second, since Ms. Pullen founded her business on heirloom sewing, there are a LOT of things with lace and/or embroidery.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Third, there are almost no men's clothing at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fourth, most items are featured in a 2-page layout. One large, full-page photo of the item with a 1/2 to 3/4 page description that includes 1 or 2 small detail shots. There are 5 or 6 items in each book that are given a 4-page spread with more photos and detail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fifth, there are small drawings of some of the embroidery patterns from the items in the back of each book. The drawings can be enlarged for use in hand embroidery and re-creations of the items. There is also a mention that Ms. Pullen sells a CD with the embroidery patterns for machine embroidery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, the items featured are mostly between the late 1890s and early 1910s. I'd say at least 3/4 of the adult clothing falls in this time period. (except for the DAR museum book)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I've always wanted to visit the Kent State Museum's costume collection, so I was very excited to see these books.<br />
<br />
They have a couple of dresses from the 1820s, but most things fall into the time period that I mentioned above.<br />
<br />
Descriptions of the items are good, sometimes giving dimensions of lace or trims, etc. They also mention things that sewers like to know, such as bodices and sleeves cut on the biases and things like that. <br />
<br />
My only criticism is that the dates are sometimes hard to find for each item. Each description starts with a quote from a period magazine or book that relates to the featured item. The date for the quote is clearly given. But sometimes these quotes are several years off from the actual date of the items. You must read through the first paragraph of the description to get the clothing's date.<br />
<br />
But that's a small quibble and shouldn't deter you from getting the books.<br />
<br />
<br />
<u>The DAR Museum </u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxkhZtL_Q0eveBl9W_neDYdqiVa7yGIxHgQJ1OrpIDdc-CL40FphPI9F4lL43jBVEE1k_vnUapQhu0AIiaKk_rzorxNx9reUm7MZdsYd1i7__gIot1XC59LKW4dGvYZuf5LPMiEGzboEc/s1600/dar+museum+book+cover..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxkhZtL_Q0eveBl9W_neDYdqiVa7yGIxHgQJ1OrpIDdc-CL40FphPI9F4lL43jBVEE1k_vnUapQhu0AIiaKk_rzorxNx9reUm7MZdsYd1i7__gIot1XC59LKW4dGvYZuf5LPMiEGzboEc/s200/dar+museum+book+cover..JPG" width="152" /></a></div>
This entry in the "favorite places series" is a little more spread out time-wise and gender-wise.<br />
There are several men's waistcoats from the 1700s and up to the 1830s.<br />
<br />
The women's clothing is also earlier than those from the Kent State books. One item from the 1700s, 5 from 1800-1820s, 5 from 1830-1860s, 4 from 1870-1880s, and the rest from later.<br />
<br />
The date for each featured item is found right at the top of the description. The items are separated by age and gender. All of the children's clothing is at the front, then women's clothing and then men's clothing at the back.<br />
<br />
The descriptions in this book are a little more geared toward what was going on in society and fashion over-all than the previous books, but still have some of that construction info that we costumers love. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<u>The Vintage Collection of Martha Pullen vol 1</u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGh0IYwJ30FC_AFYPvP5SMT0OZy8LQfCxvkCXeK4s1i6UdsP6z67j5-Nhvy5nR-p08h_QTa304dOeTUWcpMG8fsi1v2n4UmVzIlh5nB4s9uzXCsZRIpZ8YPwSh30zQto9jWArETD5zi-s/s1600/vintage+collection+of+martha+pullen+book+cover+vol+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGh0IYwJ30FC_AFYPvP5SMT0OZy8LQfCxvkCXeK4s1i6UdsP6z67j5-Nhvy5nR-p08h_QTa304dOeTUWcpMG8fsi1v2n4UmVzIlh5nB4s9uzXCsZRIpZ8YPwSh30zQto9jWArETD5zi-s/s200/vintage+collection+of+martha+pullen+book+cover+vol+1.jpg" width="152" /></a></div>
Ms. Pullen collects white clothing with interesting lace and embroidery. So that's what you'll find in this book. The vast majority are white. And out of the women's clothing, only 1 item is earlier than 1900.<br />
This book, like the others, is split evenly between adult and children's clothing.<br />
<br />
It also has 2 pillows and 2 embroidery scraps featured in addition to the clothing.<br />
<br />
Unlike the others, which were written by curators of the museums mentioned, this book was actually written by Ms. Pullen. Since her main interest is in sewing, the descriptions in this book are more geared toward sewers. She gives much more nitty-gritty detail about the construction than the other books in the series.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For example, here's a paragraph from the description of a woman's camisole from c.1900:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"The padded satin stitch flowers and bow design on this particular piece were worked on both fronts of the camisole and again at the center back. Hand scallops formed with a buttonhole stitch were meticulously worked all the way around the neckline, down both sides of the front, and around the armscyes. A strip of a beautiful Swiss beading, through which ribbon is run to cinch in the camisole, defines the waistline. Eyelets worked in sets of two completely around the neckline serve the same purpose; ribbon is woven through them to pull up the fullness and to tie the camisole closed at the top. The bottom was finished with a 1/4 inch wide hem secured with a running stitch. The seams are French, and the whole camisole was made entirely by hand."</div>
</blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pictures aren't as interesting for me, because of the white, white and yet more white! of the items, and because of the narrow time period featured. But the construction details mentioned more than make up for that. I might have bought the second volume at full price just for that, except that it's out of print and used copies I've found are way too expensive.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All-in-all, I'm glad I bought these books. The photography quality is good, the usefulness of the descriptions varies, but is overall good as well. Definitely worth more than the $7.95 I paid for each of them.</div>

<br />
Here's a close-up of my hubby: <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz_ZabZzh5OCaKLplqOByAyXJ18iNIxVAdhHVXNg8ZWAornypmvYq1D2y_-1PlBsiz47PRpVxnpFmMnrgzMb8tbDmwOVA64RFYO8bT7FEkY-ulo7lU5IANBDDL4WZQ9nWUzeX6Wh4CpN0/s320/008.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="240" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yes, he really is as ornery as he looks! ;)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
His character was an airship gambler. That's the steampunk version of a riverboat gambler. So he sewed card suit charms on his hat. The side you can't see has a pair of cards stuck in the hatband that he informs me is called the "dead man's hand". He made the hatband himself (with the help of a friend) out of copper flashing and parts from an old grandfather clock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the full-length version. The pants and shirts that he wore were all hand made, and the vests and accessories were purchased to go with them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikgAvvCLo8GoVu-4ljfTyqLQKGKcIZVUX-htlz713V_ISZ-FXYx0SfLnSOZZXve7ONSnsMnrSKpDA2Kmf9n9c2PqhV2a9D3mJDixHWW-45FFRi0TsUcDWpuB-naKrSUCFghzjmYxqH6Vc/s1600/DSCN0270a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikgAvvCLo8GoVu-4ljfTyqLQKGKcIZVUX-htlz713V_ISZ-FXYx0SfLnSOZZXve7ONSnsMnrSKpDA2Kmf9n9c2PqhV2a9D3mJDixHWW-45FFRi0TsUcDWpuB-naKrSUCFghzjmYxqH6Vc/s320/DSCN0270a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
One day he wanted to have me paint his face for the photo session. The first one went up too far on his forehead and ended up being covered by his hat. The second photo was the final design that he wore.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here are my other costumes from Teslacon. I went very heavy on the red and black because I already had pieces from my Madame Red costume and I re-used my neo-bedouin outfit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this is what I wore on Friday:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiilJJN0WozsCLH3_NKRdsRBOBnV9VBPSfOoNSmfYj-L605RwxSBJUx7DhUyHHiVeaPWruRWmY-h2fSbK6Z6-ZjY6XsaibGwHVjIq-feLaEQfGYhiyH6H1lRI5VjT2mY4orTHXfffFh84Y/s1600/TES4-677+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiilJJN0WozsCLH3_NKRdsRBOBnV9VBPSfOoNSmfYj-L605RwxSBJUx7DhUyHHiVeaPWruRWmY-h2fSbK6Z6-ZjY6XsaibGwHVjIq-feLaEQfGYhiyH6H1lRI5VjT2mY4orTHXfffFh84Y/s320/TES4-677+small.jpg" width="204" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted a kind of mad scientist/Victorian lady look. I took my Madame Red skirt and built on that. There's a band of plastic test tubes sewn around my hat (which I bought at Naka-Kon because it was the right shade of red!) The test tubes are filled with things that I scrounged from my craft room - pearls, stones, glass micro-beads, metal chains and variegated copper foiling. It got quite a few comments. :)<br />
<br />
For the top, I wanted an old-fashioned, asymmetrical labcoat-style closure. You can't see it very well in the photo, but there is a triangular flap that snaps across the shoulder and down to the center front point. But I wanted it to fit with the Victorian bustle. I looked all over for a good pattern and found that I already had one - <a href="http://www.trulyvictorian.net/tvxcart/product.php?productid=75&cat=5&page=1" target="_blank">Truly Victorian's 1883 tail bodice pattern. </a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrlSoYpct4-6NVTUJUe06AWpJAobfMe6_TLhmuQMcJFhliBWD0E0kc6CvYrisHgq98Fs9nmYe4TBL1AACEVCw2rcEM1gQfIZUwM3L4FlXJJy37vHFWdZzbvnbv402s6P5TFsIgPHROL04/s320/TV462-01.png" width="250" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to re-do one of the front panels so that it had the right closure, but otherwise it was perfect!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fit wasn't so hot because I only had a few days before the convention to get it done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(How many other costumers are frantically sewing up to the very last second? I see you out there looking guilty!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Because I was cutting it so close, I didn't make a mock-up.<br />
The sleeves are much too loose as a result. I'll have to redo them. And I think I can finesse the bust area to be a little smoother, too.<br />
<br />
It ended up being not quite as "labcoat-y" as I wanted, though. (Yes, I know that's not really a word.)<br />
The water-soluble marker that I used to mark the center line down the front wasn't quite as soluble as advertised. I was left with a faint line down the front.<br />
<br />
There was much screaming and gnashing of teeth when I discovered that!<br />
Okay, maybe not so much teeth-gnashing, but there was some throwing and cursing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have time to redo the whole thing. (Last minute, remember?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I grabbed a bunch of decorative braid that I had left over from a previous costume and used it in a military-style effect to cover the little (giant!) boo-boo. Then I trimmed around the wrists and around the tail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It turned out all right, I thought. It was very eye-catching among all of the browns and muted colors that are typically used for Steampunk.</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And I wore my neo-bedouin outfit on Saturday.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiM2DTGpSqEqd7hzVJneQum34IdF9W_YlGAF4h8PKhR4VK0kdYkSdfMgXz_wzcO5ma4ZdCI1R0dXE6BjVngQ8pWYSb-7BfX6hEj50NzAL7RysttaSEhcoj3L2Tx43G3CN71SmZT8eQEvQ/s1600/TES4-739+small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiM2DTGpSqEqd7hzVJneQum34IdF9W_YlGAF4h8PKhR4VK0kdYkSdfMgXz_wzcO5ma4ZdCI1R0dXE6BjVngQ8pWYSb-7BfX6hEj50NzAL7RysttaSEhcoj3L2Tx43G3CN71SmZT8eQEvQ/s320/TES4-739+small.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<br />
Not going to say much about this one since I've already talked about it in a previous post. I did wrap a different turban to go with the red and black theme this time. Added some beads and a Japanese hair ornament stuck into it, too.<br />
<br />
This is me hamming it up for the camera, pretending to be regal and the queen of my alien planet.<br />

Teslacon is one of the largest steampunk conventions in the Midwest. <br />
<br />
<br />
It was fun! But I was so lax in taking photos that I hardly have any. And most of those are from the first day. I'll put some up in a future post.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For now, I'll post pics of mine and my hubby's costumes from Thursday (Halloween, as it happens).<br />
<br />
Here's what we were walking around in:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
